Instead of trying to clean up environmental damage, the focus should be on reducing the causes, including economic and population growth, ravenous resource consumption and social values.
– 2007 UN Global Environmental Outlook

To empower people to act., we need to bring a fundamentally changed world into the realm of the possible. To create hope.
– 2007 “The Geography of Hope” by Chris Turner

Through excellent communication by environmental advocates like Al Gore, most people are aware of the deteriorating state of the world. The troubling and visible effects of global warming, toxic substances hiding in our water, dwindling natural resources, the exploitation of fragile ecosystems for profit, and battles worldwide over the appropriate policies are increasing steadily around the world: these problems are most contributed to by people and businesses, particularly in consumer-focused North America. Increasing amounts of youth aged 14-25, and many of their educators and parents want to help diminish the problems, but they need assistance to focus on manageable projects and to maintain optimism and persistence.

RATE Responsible Action Towards the Environment is a project comprised of secondary supplementary curricular materials, post secondary activities, website, science educator facilitator, community projects and more. The aim is to explain the key issues surrounding environmental problems, and promote sustainable living through proactive daily activities involving energy, transportation, building, water resources, lifestyle and more. It incorporates over five years of review of current research reports, innovative case studies that demonstrate achievable gains, and the facilitator to support participants local efforts. From this, we anticipate that they will become increasingly responsible for their world, and the world of future generations.

With substantial donations in the first year the project will be offered free to hundreds of thousands of students, educators and parents for testing purposes. In subsequent years funding will make it available at no cost to anyone in our target audiences across the country. We plan to license a producer for a television documentary and CD/DVD, which should reach millions of people.

RATE has been presented at seven international conferences since 2004, including United Nations COP11, GLOBE, + EECO.
